SOCIAL POLICY NO 1/2007 (394), 2007 WE RECOMMEND THE PAPERS:

Zofii Jacukowicz- The Minimum Wage: Business’ Opinion

The results of our study on how the minimum wage functions are presented. The level of the minimum wage and its role in the remuneration system at the individual firm level, and its value from the perspectives of employees and employers are discussed. The research is presented in the form of interviews. One hundred eighty businesses, employing over 26 thousand people in total, were interviewed. Many of the questions concerned the issue of raising the minimum wage and the resulting consequences to the employers. The results of the research showed that a large variety of employers with many different salary structures, contrary to the common belief, are ready to raise the minimum wage.

Anny Ruzik- The Minimum Wage Impact on Employment Levels in Poland

The study is focused on an impact of the minimal wage changes on employment in Poland in years 2002-2003. It starts with the review of both theoretical and empirical literature for different countries. Then individual data from the labour force survey was used to show impact of different variables on probability of outflow from employment. The results of the research show that among others increase in the minimum wage could be significant for an increase in probability of loosing job in the described period.

Bogusławy Urbaniak- TWorkers Aged 45+ and their Problems

In the year 2005, Polish population aged 55–64 years showed the lowest level of economic activity in EU-25 (27.2%). Actions should be taken therefore to improve the situation, as it produces a series of negative socio-economic consequences. The article presents outcomes of surveys focused on a group of workers aged 45+, which investigated workers’ problems with staying on the Łódź labor market. Attention was paid to both subjective and objective circumstances related to variables such as sex, age, level of education, occupied position, years of service, as well as working life’s experiences arising from changing jobs and unemployment.

Wiktora Rutkowskiego- Dynamics of the German Market Economy

The paper concerns the directions of adaptation of the social security system in Germany, undertaken in the face of economic challenges. The analysis concentrates on changes in pension system and health care system. The social market economy has secured, for a long period, favorable institutional frames for economic and social welfare. But since the mid of 70., while the economic situation has made worse, many changes were introduced in the social security system. Nevertheless, the scale and the depth of changes are considered as insufficient. The decisions undertaken in this decade, especially under the program “Agenda 2010”, can signal the greater determination of politicians to modernize the social security system.

Izabeli Grabowskiej-Lusińskiej - Job Migrations of Poles to Irleand – Facts and Myths

The purpose of this paper is to verify the common myths on the Polish labour migrations to Ireland through the analytical answers to the key questions constantly appearing in the public debate in Poland. The first question relates to the rationale of Poles going to Ireland- the new immigration country (the new migration route) and what stays behind the growing attraction of Ireland to labour immigrations. Secondly, how the Irish government had been opening the door of the Eire to the job migrants during the time of the biggest and historical enlargement of the European Union, which took place on May 1st 2004. The third question posed is on the scientific facts relating to the Polish job migrations to Ireland. The last but not least hypothesis derived from the analysis is on reasons staying behind ‘migration magnetism’ between Ireland and Poland.
