Arkadiusz Karwacki, Tomasz Szlendak - Poverty and Income Inequalities as Sources of Social Problems - a Test of the Spirit Level Concept
The aim of the article is to verify the assumptions by Richard G. Wilkinson and Kate E. Pickett (2009) indicating a strong correlation between the inequality of income range and social problems evidenced in contemporary developed countries (the thesis is called the Spirit Level concept). In the article the concept is tested by the comparison of correlations between poverty measured according to the absolute interpretation (whose indicators are the percentage of people living on less than 5 euros a day and the evidence of difficulty in the payment of water, gas and electricity bills) as well as income range in a given country (measured by means of the Gini index) and such social problems as infant mortality per 1000 births and the number of homicides per 100 000 inhabitants. This relation has been tested in 20 European Union countries. The analyses indicate that the spread of absolute poverty (more than the scale of income inequalities) influences the intensification of social problems occurrences.

Piotr Szukalski - Some remarks on Family Change: on the Margins of Research on Extra-marital Births in Poland
Extramarital births and extramarital fertility are useful indicator of family change in Poland. In the article attention was given to few facets of family change - i.e. decline in ties within the triad marriage-sex-procreation, cultural break between successive cohorts in domain of demographic behaviours, and spatial differences in pace of changes in family formation patterns.

Bogumiła Mucha-Leszko, Magdalena Kąkol - Migration after the European Union Enlargement
The work aims are: 1) analysis of intra EU migration after the recent regional block enlargement, 2) evaluation of its economic outcomes for the countries with the most inflow of immigrants and for which labour migration size was significant relative to their population potential. The most important conclusions are the following: 1) immigrants came mainly from the less developed countries, 2) migration had a positive impact on EU economic growth, 3) immigrants constituted complementary labour and did not cause labour market deterioration in the EU-15 countries, 4) financial remittances to emigrants countries were an important factor of demand growth.

Marek Bryła, Irena Maniecka-Bryła - Population Ageing as a Challenge for the Health Policy
The paper departs from considering the role of measuring the health situation of elderly people in relation to shaping the health policy as a part of the social policy. Then the paper raises practical questions concerning population ageing. The results of two research studies dealing with this issue are evolved. The first one was carried out in 13 European countries by the Reader’s Digest, whereas the second one – DIALOG Population Policy Acceptance Study was conducted in 14 European countries. Furthermore, the problems of health of the elderly are presented on the basis of selected documents of the World Health Organization and the European Union. Then we delve into the issue of health-related quality of life of the elderly, with the use of new measures of the burden of disease. The last part of the paper sketches the process of population ageing in Europe and in Poland. Several references are made to documents establishing the health policy.

Marek Szczepaniec, Tomasz Jurkiewicz - Human Capital and its Accumulation in Small and Medium Companies
The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical quantitative evidence concerning human capital in SMEs, the relationship between knowledge accumulation and firm size / firm human capital. This article provides analysis of the key findings of the survey which was conducted among 1308 small and medium sized enterprises in the private sector in Poland. The findings highlight the important role played by human capital in knowledge acquisition and performance of SMEs. The proportion of entrepreneurs who have achieved a tertiary education (38%) is almost 21% higher than that of the 24-to-64-year-olds. 29,3% of SMEs train their employees, but only 2,3% SMEs use advisory services of knowledge centers, and 5,5% of SMEs carry on marketing research. Human capital embodied in business owner has positive effect on propensity to train employees, use of advisory services and carrying on marketing research. There is also significant firm size effect that influences SME knowledge acquisition. The results indicate that development of knowledge can be affected by investments in human capital, and should be of interest to policy makers developing new strategies and policies to support the growth of SMEs in Poland.
